On a batting pitch of Napier, Sehwag and Sachin provided the initial platform and then Dhoni along with Raina brought India to a total which was not easy for Kiwis. Then rain too went against Kiwis and thus D/L created problem for them, and finally thanks to some brilliant bowling display by Bhajji, Zaheer and Praveen Kumar Team India won the match by 53 runs.

With this victory Team India is leading the five match series by 1-0. This victory has provided the confidence back to the Indian team, they were on back foot after loosing the two Twenty20 matches. The scene changed once Dhoni won the toss again. Winning the toss Dhoni decided to bat first, he was aware that Rain is going to decide the faith of the match. Meanwhile rain stopped the match for a few moments and thus the match curtailed to 38 overs. When match resumed again Sehwag started firing too. Sachin too opened the hand, but felt out very soon. He made only 20 runs. Then it was skipper Dhoni who along with Sehwag brought the score to 121 runs in 18.1 overs, but then Sehwag became out. Shortly yuvraj too fell, but then it was Raina who along with skipper brought score to 241 runs at 34.5 overs.

After the departure of Raina it was Yusuf Pathan who made a quick 20 runs in only 10 balls. Finally Team India made 273 runs in 38 overs. Sehwag made 77 runs in 56 balls, hitting 11 boundaries and 1 six, Sachin made 20 runs in 23 balls hitting 2 boundaries, Dhoni made unbeaten 84 runs in 89 balls hitting 6 boundaries, Yuvraj made only 2 runs, Raina made 66 runs in only 39 balls hitting 5 boundaries and 4 six, and Yusuf Pathan made 20 runs in 10 balls hitting 2 boundaries and 1 six.

Due to D/L method the target given to Kiwis was of 278 runs in 38 overs which was later reduced to 216 runs in 28 overs. From the very beginning they were on the back foot, McCullum dismissed at the very second over while the score was 0 at that time. Ryder too dismissed while the score was only 23 runs in 7.4th over.

After the fall of these two wickets Taylor along with Guptill consolidated the innings and made 81 runs in 15.4 overs. But then Taylor felt and then in the 20.5th over Elliott became run out. Then the rain came again and the game stopped for a few minutes, after the resume of the play in the very first ball Yuvi dismissed Oram.

After this Harbhajan Singh bowled the dream over which was the 24th over of the game. Guptill hit him for two boundaries in the first two balls while after that within 4 balls Bhajji dismissed Guptill, Broom and then Mills. And the next ball of Zaheer Khan too dismissed Butler for a Duck, and almost the game was over for them.

Skipper Vettori played a few shots after this and finally Team India won the match by a margin of 53 runs. Dhoni was elected as the Man of the Match for his superb scores of 84 runs.
